BakerRipley’s Learning and Innovation Centers are designed to be places of inspiration that offer unique learning experiences, tools and opportunities. From 3D printing, laser cutters, and engraving machines to editing videos, recording podcasts and exploring robotics each of our four centers offers opportunities for K-12 students and adults.

About

BakerRipley has partnered with Verizon to promote and enhance technology-centered learning that focuses on STEM and STEAM education, professional development, small business, and digital skills opportunities.

The Gulfton Learning Center and East End Learning Center feature community-based events, workshops and independent work opportunities in the following areas for:

Adults/Small businesses

  • Audio, video, photography and content creation tools
  • 3D printing: learn 3D modeling software and print your creation onsite.
  • Laser cutting and engraving: Design and create using a variety of materials.
  • Professional Development / Team Building: Learn and practice the fundamental concepts of design thinking.

 

For youth, we offer various classes with local schools and organizations: 

  • Coding, robotics, and STEM education
  • Content creation – podcasting, music recording, photography, video recording and editing
  • Digital Fabrication (Laser cutting/engraving and 3D printing)
  • 21st century skills: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity
  • Immersive AR/VR Experiences

FabLab Houston

FabLab Houston is located at BakerRipley’s East Aldine Campus. One of only 10 FabLabs in the United States, this 5,000 square foot facility is a maker space for youth and adults to enjoy a safe environment as they engage in creative pursuits and hands-on learning opportunities.  

Supported by Chevron and the Fab Foundation the FabLab is open Tuesday – Friday 10:00am – 6:00pm and offers exciting opportunities to Aldine and surrounding neighborhoods:

  • School Open House/STEM Events: We bring table activities, Mobile Fablab, and outreach presentations to local schools and community events.

  • After-school Programs for students to enhance STEM/STEAM skills, cognitive and engineering design thinking, and creative outlets.
  • In School Programs that expose students to STEM/STEAM experiences.
  • Field Trips that allow organizations and schools to bring groups of students to the FabLab for creative programing.
  • Summer Camps allow for a deeper dive into STEM/STEAM programs that move the participant from beginner to intermediate, and for some advanced!

  • Introductory Workshops to digital fabrication (woodworking, 3d printing, sewing, laser cutter, vinyl cutter). Coming soon – Welding, Ceramics and more.
  • Professional Development(PD) programs offer a variety of technical, software, and tool-based training that empower the learner to broaden their skills. Our PD is set up to both teach the teacher or enhance a person’s knowledge.
  • Team Building exists at the apex of learning and collaboration. Allow us the opportunity to curate an experience that your whole team will enjoy!

For DIYers, small business owners and hobbyists interested in becoming part of our maker community. Gain training and access to a

  • wood router
  • CNC milling machine
  • suite of electronic components
  • selection of programming tools for microcontrollers and rapid circuit prototyping

These memberships are $10 per month for East Aldine residents and $50 per month for non-residents

Mobile FabLab

A Mobile FabLab, outfitted with much of the same equipment as FabLab Houston, is available at our Pasadena Community Center and locations throughout Houston. Schools, after-school programs, and community events can rent the Mobile FabLab for on-site lessons, professional development, team-building activities and more.
